SIGNAL FIRE
ROUND TABLE

THE WEEKLY TECHNICAL HUDDLE FOR THE GLOBAL CHURCH
SIGNAL FIRE COLLECTIVE

HELPING CHURCHES BUILD CONFIDENT, CAPABLE AUDIO TEAMS AND SYSTEMS, WITHOUT THE COST OF A FULL-TIME STAFF HIRE.

THE MISSION

We exist to inspire growth and cultivate excellence in every church with our core belief: 'Anyone can Mix.'

We believe that The Church's greatest asset isn't the gear,

but the volunteer. We provide coaching and hands-on training

to transform "fader-pushers" into confident operators,

maximizing the equipment you already own.

THE STRATEGY

We believe in the team you already have!

Our approach isn't about replacing your gear, your staff, or your volunteers—it’s about empowering them. By implementing replicable systems and hands-on coaching, we move your team beyond just "surviving" the service. We develop their audio instincts and confidence required to make them successful leaders in their own environment.

We bridge the gap between "Vision" and "Execution." We provide the real-world expertise needed to turn Sunday chaos into worshipful confidence. Whether your team members are veterans, or they just joined last week, we train everyone to utilize your equipment, in your room. Making the worship experience repeatable every Sunday.

THE GUIDE

Matt Mellinger has been a professional audio engineer, church production director, pastor, and musician for over 20 years. His passion for helping teams succeed is the DNA of Signal Fire Collective.

"I understand the power that great audio carries. I started Signal Fire Collective to move beyond just 'learning to mix' and toward building systems where anyone can succeed. I’m a firm believer that we can learn anything. When we clear the technical hurdles, the Word can spread farther and wider because we’ve learned how to truly amplify the Source."

THE MISSION LOGS

EXCELLENCE ISN'T RESERVED FOR THE ELITE.

It's a culture built at the source. Having spent two decades developing high-level leaders from

the ground up, I've seen firsthand how a single spark of training can turn volunteers into great leaders.

These are a few of those stories.

MISSION LOG 084:
A NEW FIRE

When I arrived, the congregation was small—around 65 to 90 people—and the worship and production teams were just finding their footing. The production setup was outdated and disorganized, and the worship team had untapped potential, including a high school guitarist named Joe, who was just beginning to explore the instrument despite a background in orchestra.

Over the year and a half I spent alongside the team, week after week in rehearsals, midweek practices, and Sunday services, the congregation experienced remarkable growth—both in people and in skill. The congregation nearly quadrupled, reaching close to 400 attendees on Sunday mornings. The worship team evolved, with Joe becoming the lead guitarist, and the production team of three to five volunteers grew into a polished, professional-level unit capable of running live sound for complex events. Together, we even recorded a full-length album, giving the congregation music they could worship with throughout the week.

The environment didn’t just grow in numbers—it ignited a culture of excellence, teamwork, and confidence. Watching individuals like Joe rise, the production team mature, and the congregation flourish was like seeing a spark become a sustained fire, lighting the way for worship experiences that were engaging, inspiring, and transformative.

Joe’s growth didn’t stop at this ministry. After his time on the team, he went on to develop guitar pedals for Wampler and worked for a season at Shure, the company known for their microphones and professional audio systems—continuing the trajectory of skill, leadership, and innovation that began with our team.

MISSION LOG 212:
THE STUDENT’S ASCENT

Mike Myers joined my team in 2020, right in the middle of the COVID season. He had just relocated from Kansas City, where he had been running sound for a local Hillsong church plant. Passionate about audio but stuck in a job that didn’t light him up, Mike started volunteering. His dedication, talent, and drive were unmistakable, and it didn’t take long for him to shine. Today, Mike is a full-time freelance audio engineer, running sound for artists, bands, churches of all sizes, and events all across the country—living out his calling and proving what happens when skill meets opportunity and relentless passion.

MISSION LOG 019:
REFINED PRESENCE

Sable joined as a high-level vocalist, but her leadership skills were still developing. While she had the potential, it hadn’t yet been fully refined. Over time, through consistent involvement and mentorship, Sable grew into one of the primary female vocal leaders, serving across multiple locations.

Her growth has been remarkable. As a mom of three, she volunteers at an exceptionally high level every time she performs, balancing her family responsibilities with a commitment to excellence. Sable has a very unique voice—not with an extremely wide range, but with a mastery of using the strengths God gave her. Combined with her refined leadership, she has become a powerful presence on the team, inspiring others and elevating the worship experience

for the entire congregation.

Watching Sable develop has been like pouring gas on a fire—her growth was explosive, igniting passion, confidence, and excellence throughout the worship team and the church.

MISSION LOG 157:
THE MAGNETIC EFFECT

Jaden came to the team as a 15-year-old student. Even at that age, his exceptional talent as a vocalist was only part of the story—his leadership abilities stood out even more. When he turned 16, he was hired to lead the student worship department while also serving with the adult worship team each week in a volunteer role. His faithfulness and dedication were remarkable, and he brought along a circle of close friends who were equally high-caliber musicians and vocalists, living out the principle that talent draws talent. During this time, he nearly doubled the size of the worship team.

For 4 years, I had the privilege of serving as Jaden’s primary mentor and leader. During that same era, I oversaw the production department for the auditorium, focusing on audio proficiency, and led the entire worship department. I chose the set lists, determined keys, selected singers and musicians, and built the worship teams week after week—laying a foundation that allowed Jaden to step into full-time leadership after those 4 years fully prepared. This dual oversight demonstrates how I guided both sides of worship experience—production and musical leadership—ensuring excellence across the board.

One year prior to that, Jaden and three other vocalists were accepted into the Elevation Apprenticeship program. Even with offers for salaried positions at Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, they chose to return to the team, committed to serving.

Jaden was hired as the full-time worship leader before his 21st birthday.

Since then, he has led worship on Sunday mornings, at conferences, special events, and worship nights, consistently demonstrating excellence, humility, and leadership. Jaden continues to thrive—not just as a gifted worship leader, but as an inspiring person whose influence has shaped the culture of worship.

MISSION LOG 304:
THE UNLIT MATCH

Isaiah started as a high school student with a voice so quiet it barely made it into the mix—yet he faithfully participated every week. Over time, under consistent leadership and mentorship from our leadership system, Isaiah began to step into his calling.

His growth has been remarkable. He became one of the most dynamic worship leaders, eventually serving as the lead worship leader for a campus. Isaiah’s story is a testament to perseverance, guidance, and the power of consistent mentorship—showing that even quiet beginnings can lead to extraordinary impact when talent, dedication, and opportunity are cultivated, and come together in full form.

MISSION LOG 092:
FANNING THE FLAME

While overseeing the worship and production teams, the Cardona family came onto the scene, bringing incredible talent, diversity, and leadership. Starting as a small group meeting in one of our smaller rooms, they grew from just 10 to 30 people to over 100 attendees gathering regularly each week in a short period of time. Their impact grew so much that the team transitioned to a larger space, which now hosts multiple services.

Merari Cardona, daughter of Gerson and Elsa, joined during my leadership of the production and worship teams. A gifted singer and skilled pianist, she excelled in both roles, whether accompanying on keys or leading vocally. She became the worship leader for the growing group and today leads the entire team, coordinating multiple services with identical set lists despite language differences.

The team now has a fully self-sufficient production team, composed of volunteers trained by myself and other incredible leaders.

What sets Merari apart is her grit and resilience. Despite multiple knee surgeries that at times could have sidelined her, she continues to lead with excellence every week, inspiring her team and the congregation alike. Watching her and the Cardona family develop has been like tending a steady flame—consistent, careful, and enduring. Their commitment and leadership have quietly but powerfully ignited a culture of excellence and growth.

MISSION LOG 441:
THE SIGNAL STANDARD

Craig started volunteering as a lighting operator. He didn’t program anything at first—he simply advanced the cues each week. He was opinionated about the way things sounded, so I moved him to a sound position. At that point, Craig knew nothing about audio, but he loved music and understood the vision for worship. What makes his story even more remarkable is that Craig is in the seasoned era of his life—he’s not a young adult or midlife, yet his passion and dedication allowed him to learn and excel at a professional level.

Over time, Craig’s growth has been extraordinary. Today, he is one of the top volunteers, proficient both at front-of-house and online mixes. He has trained other volunteers and consistently performs at a caliber that rivals professional sound engineers, even if that’s not his formal title.

During my extended season, I’ve had the privilege of training dozens of audio operators across multiple locations. Many started with little knowledge, yet all have developed the skills and confidence to perform at a high level of excellence. Attendance itself grew tremendously during this time—starting with 125 attendees at a single location and now drawing 800 to 1,000 weekly at just that one campus. Craig’s story is just one example of how investing in people, systems, and vision can ignite growth, skill, and lasting impact.
